World Tourism Day 2012: Tourism and Energetic Sustainability
The World Tourism Day was established by the General Assembly of the World Tourism Organisation in 1979 in the Spanish town Torremolino. The aim of this day is the advocacy of tourism, lighting its contribution to the world economy and developing connections between different nations. World Tourism Day is celebrated in Russia since September 27, 1983.
The purpose of this day is to raise awareness on the role of tourism within the international community and to demonstrate how it affects social, cultural, political and economic values worldwide. At its Twelfth Session in Istanbul, Turkey, in October 1997, the UNWTO General Assembly decided to designate a host country each year to act as the Organisation's partner in the celebration of World Tourism Day. 2012 is after Maspalomas, Gran Canaria.
Each year the WTO declares a new theme of World Tourism Day, in the year 2012: Tourism and Energetic Sustainability. Tourism is at the forefront in the implementation of some of the most innovative initiatives in the field of sustainable energy in the world. According to the World Tourism Organisation, in the first half of 2012 the number of international tourists in the world amounted to 467 million people.
"The role of tourism in the economy of the country is difficult to overestimate. Growth of the sector are at least 4% per year. According to the World Council of Travel and Tourism (WTTC), in 2011, the contribution of tourism to the economy of Russia amounted to 3.4 trillion rubles, and this almost 6% of GDP," - says Rostourism Head Alexander Radkov.
