Where the wind blows the most

Where the wind blows the most

The Varanger Kraft company is investing almost €80 million in a wind power project on Norway's Arctic coast, at one of the most windy spots in Europe.

The new wind park will be located on the coast of the Barents Sea on the place, which might be the most windy spot in all of the Nordic countries, a press release from developer Varanger Kraft reads. A total of 600 million NOK (€79 million) will be invested in 15 new turbines. The production capacity of 45 MW will be enough to provide sufficient power to 9500 families.

“This is an important milestone in the history of Varanger Kraft, company director Kjell Eliassen underlines. He stresses that the Raggovidda project will unfold on the ultimate place for wind power generation.

Varanger Kraft in 2010 got the green light for the project from the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE). The company has permission to expand generation to 200 MW, enough to cover the consumption of more than 40,000 households.

The wind generators will be delivered by Siemens. The construction is due to start in August 2013 and be completed late fall 2014.

Raggovidda is located in the municipality of Berlevåg and will be among the northernmost wind power projects in the world.
